About this deal

The only hurdle is explaining how it works, because there's a lot going on simultaneously and as one of my friends said last night "there is a lot of writing". I don’t think this has the same pick-up-and-play quality that makes Codenames so … ubiquitous, even though I think they’re very similar conceits. There are plenty of great clues to communicate to your teammates – who can also read the keywords – but the clever part is coming up with clues that will make it difficult for the message to be stolen. It seems quite complicated looking back over it, but actually once you have played a few rounds you really do slip into the game very easily. The next match has you immediately savvier, slyer, weaving around words like a snake around rocks, trying your best to veer in the weirdest direction you can when you think your enemies are on your tail.

The creativity of using both the most obscure yet informative word to lead your team to the clue is where the fun of Decrypto really resides. The idea for the game is you each have a private encryption / decryption key (linking 4 random words to the numbers 1-4), and you use them to try to transmit a 3-digit number to your team while the opposing team tries to figure out your encryption and intercept your messages. Both teams put up a cardboard screen into which they slot four secret words, words the opposing team will never see. If you enjoy word association games with an element of deduction and creative thinking then this game is perfect for you.It is not a traditional silly party game, and unlike quiz games that can make you feel stupid for not knowing something, this just challenges you with being diverse with your answers and how you might be able to draw connections between words.

Decrypto is a fascinating communication game where teams compete against each other to relay information to each other while not allowing the other team to intercept that same message. It creates some memorable moments as you try to outwit your opponents without confusing your teammates. The rules state all clues must be in the "public" domain so that no in jokes between family members or friends can be used. This list has wallet-sized and wallet-friendly games; games for the first timer and for friends who have been playing for years. It gets you thinking fast and looking for ways to describe words you’d probably never have thought of before.

These failed code guesses are what dock you points and make your opponents even MORE likely to win, meaning you have to expertly walk the line between vague and incomprehensible, as if trying to pass some sort of lexical sobriety test. You cannot use your keywords as clues, give clues that relate to the spelling, position, or pronunciation of a keyword, or use a clue more than once per game. Everyone enjoys busting out the optional sand timer to make someone else hurry up, just for the sake of being a word-jerk. Because I am recommending Decrypto as hard as I recommend our beloved Codenames, particularly if that’s also a game you adore. As Dale said, it can be clutch to have a large enough team that someone will rescue your crappy clue, and big props to our teamwork yesterday, as there were several clues that were about to go sideways before one teammate or another stood their ground on a certain interpretation and was proven right.

If the team fail to get the code this means communication has broken down and you receive one black token, if you receive two of these token in the game your team loses due to poor communication. You’re not just giving or receiving clues; you’re getting pieces of a mosaic and you need to make sure you’re spending some time trying to see the forest for the trees. If they guess correctly, nothing happens – though – as they were able to look at the target words, you’d expect them to usually get it right… If the intercepting team guesses incorrectly, nothing happens. The more clues you get throughout the course of the game, the better you’ll be able to infer which number a certain clue may refer to. Decrypto is a simple code-cracking team game in which each group tries to discern a 3 digit code by interpreting messages posed by teammates while at the same time trying to figure out the opposing team’s codes.

When you place the word in the Decrypto panel, the word is revealed, each secret word when placed in the panel will have a accordioning number from one to four which will be used as part of a code. Decrypto is suitable for three to eight players, created by Thomas Dagenais-Lespérance, and published by Le Scorpion Masqué and IELLO.After just one play of Decrypto I knew I liked it and I was intrigued to know what the Laserdrive expansion brought to the table. That said, it makes a great gift, and I think it’s a hoot to play, so if you’re looking for another team deduction game that’s a solid fit for a board game night, I’d highly recommend checking out Decrypto!
