The irritating problem of regular entanglement and associated wrestling and wrenching of the rope that many extending pruners employ is bypassed (oops, pun) by the clever internal webbing strap and bike chain (didn't expect to see that! I was impressed by the build quality of this telescopic pruner, but that wasn’t a surprise as I own several garden tools by this manufacturer including a manual lawn mower, and they’ve all been trouble-free. He previously worked as a project manager and has experience in managing teams of tradespeople and landscape gardeners on both small and medium sized projects. This tree pruner has a good long handle (4 metres) so with suitable ladders and your own reach has a very acceptable long reach for pruning tree branches etc.Has already proved to be invaluable and worked off the ground where a ladder would have been necessary before I bought this. This impressive reach means you can trim overhead without the need for a ladder, or at ground level without having to bend or kneel, making your gardening tasks easier and more efficient. If you have trees, bushes or tall shrubs in your garden you’ll know that pruning the branches back and keeping them in check can be a pain.
I tested this pruner at a demonstration event back in 2022, and I was surprised at how well it cut through thick timbers. The pruner is very easy to use, but I don't feel confident to force it to cut very thick branches as claimed. This pruner is designed to provide an extended reach for cutting fresh wood up to 32mm in diameter, making it an ideal tool for maintaining tree crowns and dense bushes.The extended reach makes it very suitable for cutting up to 4 metres and the pole is not too heavy or unwieldy to use. A few years ago I made a pruning saw up out of four alloy poles that pushed together with a blade attached. I’ve seen competing products that weigh double and even triple this and I can only imagine how much arm ache the user would experience!
I’ve used the Gardena Starcut 410 Plus lopper to cut many hundreds of branches on trees and tall shrubs in 2022, and overall, I’m delighted with the tool’s performance. For cutting branches up to 32mm, I rate it 9/10, but sometimes I came across thicker branches and without a saw attachment, I couldn’t cut them and had to put my ladder up and saw off them the old-fashioned way. Some of the willows had branches over 12 inches in diameter (and were very rotten ) but you can cut from behind and out of harms way.Of note is how easily the blades chopped through the branches; I didn’t need to use much strength due to the gearing system, which increases the pressure on the wood by a factor of twelve. It doesn’t have a saw attachment, and in fact, the head can’t be changed at all as it’s fixed in place. Not into Taking pictures of tools but it was one of the few on my ipad which my daughter had taken doing a bit of reportage! The battery-powered Greenworks pruner was highlighted based on its specifications and online reviews.
Batteries have improved so much over the last decade that they’re now powerful enough to cut through branches up to 200mm (8″), and they can last for well over 50 cuts of thick timber and over 100 branches of various thicknesses. We recently purchased a pole saw from the Stihl Kombi system, handy for taking off overhanging branches for the post driver.
