About this deal

Connolly later discovered that six of the eight boys he had shared a dormitory with had died. Connolly said each had taken their own lives either by drug overdose or suicide. Paul Connolly’s actions brought shame to the Catholic Church in Tasmania, but more importantly his abuse of this girl brought with it ongoing pain and devastation to the rest of this lady’s life. St Leonard’s was operated by Tower Hamlets London Borough Council from the late 1960’s until the early 1980’s. It emerged that one house-father, Bill Starling, 94, had indecently assaulted, raped or buggered 11 victims, aged between five to 14 years old over twenty years, The Guardian reports. When Paul was there, Alan Prescott was the Head. Pauls house parents were Bill Starling, and Auntie "Coral" which is a pseudonym. All these were child abusers physically, sexually and emotionally. Paul himself was not sexually assaulted, perhaps because of his aggressiveness to the people concerned, but he did suffer physical and emotional abuse.

During the course of the hearings, a representative of Tower Hamlets gave an apology on behalf of the Council to all victims and survivors, and thanked them for their courage in coming forward to seek justice. Nottingham and Shirley Oaks have blazed a trail of forming survivors groups and both achieved an investigation by the Goddard inquiry. Viewers have labelled the series as “heart breaking” as it follows the story of Paul Connolly who was abandoned in a dustbin as a baby and later ended up at St Leonard’s. Prescott was the Assistant director of Tower Hamlets Social Services, a Magistrate and a Labour Councillor and was a child abuser at St Leonards. Did he visit other homes and abuse? What action did Tower Hamlets take after the court case? What did his Labour colleagues know? Why did he get such a light sentence? How did the Police lose a video tape and other evidence and what was done about this? Did the Police investigate the 50's and 60's abuse? Paul has spoken of how the children would not go to school as they would be bullied following the abuse at the children's home, and instead would go and ride horses.

He works with various charities and is a core participant in the IICSA historical child abuse enquiry providing a voice for many no longer able to speak up. Above all else, Paul is most proud of being a loving father to his two sons. The confrontation, which happened when Paul was 13 years old, meant that the abuse towards him stopped. Learning to read and write as an adult Paul was transferred to St Leonard's Children's Home in Hornchurch, which use to be situated between a bus garage and a park. He then attended lessons to learn how to read and write in his 20s, because he felt it would aid his career as a boxer. I have quite the interest in tragic life stories, I’m not sure if it’s reading how people can triumph over the awful obstacles that have been put in their path, or because my previous work experience has involved me in similar cases, but I will often seek these books out. Paul Connolly’s looked like another such tale, of a young boy succeeding despite the odds.

He was charged by the police, convicted and spent time in jail for this abuse. Following his release he lived privately until his death in 2014.
