We don't expect much speed from eMMC hard drives, such as the 64GB module in the IdeaPad 120S, but this one fell under even those modest expectations. It took the notebook 2 minutes and 12 seconds to duplicate a DVD's worth of multimedia files, for a rate of 38.6 megabytes per second. That's slower than the 84.8MBps from the Inspiron 11 (32GB eMMC) and the 50.4MBps from the Stream 11. In 2016, the company ranked first in the world in computer sales. The IdeaPad 120S' screen performed better in our brightness test, registering 219 nits on our light meter. The IdeaPad 120S has dual bottom-facing speakers that provided adequate sound. The 2 x 1 watt stereo speakers reproduced semiaccurate audio that was loud enough to fill our small conference room. When I listened to "Call Me Baby" by EXO, I could hear the bass and synth all right. But the percussion sounded tinny, and the strings were barely audible. At least the vocals came through clearly, with little distortion. Positive: Good price; slim size; light weight; high performance; excellent display; comfortable keyboard; good connectivity; long battery life. The advantage of subnotebooks is that the entire laptop can be small and therefore easily portable. The smaller display also has the advantage of requiring less power, which further improves battery life and thus mobility. The disadvantage is that reading texts is more strenuous on the eyes.
